Sell a Car With Outstanding Finance — Your Guide to Selling

Sell a Car With Outstanding Finance

Yes — you can sell a car that still has finance on it, and it's more common than you might think. If you have a car on PCP or HP and want to sell before the agreement ends, here's how it works and how Fast Easy Car can help you settle the balance as part of the sale.

The Legal Position

Until your finance is fully settled, the finance company legally owns the car — not you. This means you can't simply sell it privately without their knowledge. However, you can sell the car with the finance company's agreement, or the buyer can settle the finance on your behalf as part of the transaction.

This is completely legal and happens every day. The key is transparency: the finance company needs to be paid, and any remaining balance after settlement goes to you (or, if the car is worth less than the settlement figure, you'd need to cover the difference).

How Settlement Works

Here's the process when you sell a car with outstanding finance through Fast Easy Car:

1. Get a settlement figure Contact your finance company and ask for a settlement figure — this is the amount needed to pay off the finance and transfer ownership to you. Settlement figures are typically valid for 7–14 days.

2. Get a valuation for your car Enter your registration to get an instant online valuation. This tells you what your car is worth.

3. Compare the two

  • If your car is worth more than the settlement figure: we pay the finance company the settlement amount, and you receive the remaining balance.
  • If your car is worth less than the settlement figure (negative equity): you'd need to pay the difference to settle the finance. We can talk you through your options.

4. We settle the finance and collect the car If you accept the valuation, we arrange to settle the finance directly with your finance company and collect the car. You're paid any remaining balance on collection.

PCP vs HP — What's the Difference?

PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) With PCP, you don't own the car until you've made the optional final "balloon" payment. To sell before the end of the agreement, you need to settle the finance — which includes the remaining monthly payments plus the balloon payment (or a portion of it, depending on the terms). Some PCP agreements have an early termination fee; check your contract.

HP (Hire Purchase) With HP, you own the car once the final payment is made. To sell before the end of the agreement, you need to settle the remaining balance. There's no balloon payment with HP — the settlement figure is the remaining monthly payments plus any fees.

Both can be settled as part of a sale. The process is the same: get a settlement figure, get a valuation, and we handle the rest.

What You'll Need

  • Your car's registration number
  • Your finance account details (account number and finance company name)
  • A settlement figure from your finance company (or we can help you get one)
  • Details about the car's condition

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sell a car with outstanding finance? Yes. You can sell a car with outstanding finance, but the finance must be settled as part of the sale. We can handle this for you — we pay the finance company directly and you receive any remaining balance.

What if my car is worth less than the finance? This is called negative equity. If your car is worth less than the settlement figure, you'd need to pay the difference to settle the finance. We can talk you through your options — get a valuation first to see where you stand.

Will selling affect my credit score? As long as the finance is settled in full, selling a financed car should not negatively affect your credit score. The finance account will be marked as settled.

How long does settlement take? Settlement typically takes a few days once the finance company receives payment. We'll keep you updated throughout the process.

Do I need to tell my finance company I'm selling? Yes — your finance company needs to know. We'll handle the settlement process with them, but it's a good idea to let them know you're planning to sell.
